Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Hits First Bayer Milestone, Secures USD $1 Million for Iodine Project

Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) has reached the first milestone in its non-dilutive Collaboration and Funding Agreement with Bayer AG, dated February 10, 2026. The achievement follows Bayer's approval of a complete feasibility work plan and timetable, and has triggered a USD $1,000,000 payment to Voyageur. This news matters because it signals tangible progress toward establishing a North American source of high-purity iodine, a critical raw material for medical imaging contrast media, an industry currently reliant on imported supplies.

The milestone was earned after Voyageur's Houston R&D team successfully validated its proprietary patent-pending Mueller iodine extraction process. The team produced iodine at 99.8% purity from Anadarko Basin produced water, providing the technical confirmation Bayer required to advance the program. A transportable pilot plant is nearing completion and is scheduled to enter field operation this fall. With this payment, Voyageur has now received USD $1,350,000 of the USD $2,350,000 committed by Bayer, following initial funds of USD $350,000 paid on March 31, 2026.

These funds will allow Fluor Corporation (NYSE: FLR) to complete the FEL-3 feasibility study once the pilot plant is operational and field data are available. Fluor, a leading global engineering, procurement, and construction firm, has been providing engineering, thermodynamic modeling, and project planning support. The remaining USD $1,000,000 milestone payment is scheduled upon completion of that study. "Achievement of this first milestone under our agreement with Bayer is an important step forward for Voyageur," said Brent Willis, President and CEO. "It confirms that the feasibility work is advancing as planned and triggers the first major non-dilutive payment under the collaboration. This capital is expected to further accelerate our iodine supply strategy and move us closer to validating a reliable North American source of high-purity iodine for use in contrast media drugs."

Subject to a successful feasibility study, Bayer and Voyageur may negotiate a long-term offtake supply agreement. The project envisions production of 1,000 tonnes per year of iodine, with a staged rollout beginning at 200 tonnes per year. Upon completion and testing of a 200 tonnes per year extraction unit, Voyageur may evaluate constructing and deploying additional units to build capacity over time. A central manufacturing facility would then process iodine concentrate into USP Pharmaceutical grade iodine for contrast drugs.

The strategic implications extend beyond this single project. Voyageur aims to build a vertically integrated supply chain for radiology drugs, reducing reliance on imported raw materials and lowering operating costs. The global contrast media market is estimated at approximately USD $7.06 billion, according to Market Research Future. The collaboration with Bayer, first announced in February 2026, underscores the potential for domestic iodine production to secure supply for pharmaceutical manufacturing. For Halifax and Atlantic Canada, this development highlights the broader trend of Canadian companies pursuing innovative solutions in pharmaceutical supply chains, though the project's direct operations are centered in Alberta and Houston. As Voyageur progresses through engineering phases and field testing, the outcome could influence the availability and cost of contrast media used in medical imaging across Canada and beyond.
